So I recently made a new playlist, and it’s called “Groove Mix”. Good name, right? I have been listening to the new Passion Pit album, but I felt I covered that adequately (enough) on the podcast. So here I am; a collection of music that I wouldn’t mind hearing at school function, namely one where dancing is involved. What are those called again?
Disclaimer: The songs are listed in no particular order. I usually have the playlist on shuffle for maximum boogie.
Track 1: Banquet - Bloc Party - Probably the first dance pop track I’ve ever owned. It was on Heidi Klum’s celebrity playlist on iTunes some 4-5 years ago? That Heidi Klum, she’s a jungle woman. But uh...BLOC PARTY. Am I bad person for liking them? There’s something about the song I like. Maybe its how the vocals almost blend with the background beat to form a perfect marriage of lyrical pleasure and symphonic carnage. How ‘bout them apples?
Track 2: Folds In Your Hands – Passion Pit – I’ve been a fan of Passion Pit for a year now? Something like that. Thanks to Most People Are DJs, I’ve really been digging the stuff they’ve been putting out. Folds in Your Hands is kind of a classic Passion Pit track. The mix of dance beats, crazy lyrics and an all but pleasing voice.
Track 3: Switchblade – Heartsrevolution – YOU WANT DANCE POP?! I’LL GIVE YOU DANCE POP! Heartsrevolution (like some other artists on the playlist) fall under the Iheartcomix record label, which only put out quality. Awesome little track, very techno-like? I don’t know if I’m using that right. Definitely one of about two tracks on the list that has a distinct techno vibe. Good none the less.
Track 4: Elmo’s Wish – Gil Mantera’s Party Dream – Where do I start? GMPD is pure awesome in an easy to intake, sonic format. Watch the music video and you will never be able to think about this song without Nike shoes and gold spandex coming to mind. Definitely a hip gyrating track.
Track 5: We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed – Los Campesinos! – A little break in the onslaught of electro that’ll be pounding you’re ear-ways. Los Campesinos! doesn’t put out any sub-par tracks. Ever. Every single line drips with the passion, intensity and energy that you want all of your music to. Listen enough times, and you’ll find yourself screaming the angry lyrics out loud while walking down the street.
Track 6: Nrrrd Grrrl – MC Chris – No playlist would be complete without an appearance by our beloved, baby-faced MC. Nrrr Grrrl is a song off of MC’s new album, MC Chris Is Dead, and certainly steals the show. It’s got a good beat to it, but is definitely a nice respite compared to the other high-energy tunes. Any song that mentions the relationship between Hellion and X-23 is okay by me.
Track 7: Superheroes 2007 – The Toxic Avenger – The second of Iheartcomix tracks on the list. The most distinctly techno sounding on the entire thing. If you aren’t a fan of very little vocals, feel free to skip this one. It gives a nice time to purely dance, but it’s understandable if you don’t like it. However, be warned: This song can cause robotic tendencies to surface in humans. Watch your toasters.
Track 8: Bonnie Taylor Shakedown (2K4) – Hellogoodbye – Not to be confused with “Bonnie Taylor Shakedown (2K1)”, which in my opinion is a superior song. 2K4 provides a little bit more energy and that synth sound we absolutely love. This is my token Hellogoodbye song. I’m allowed one, right? Come on! They’re awesome!
Track 9: Atlantis to Interzone – The Klaxons – Perhaps the second dance pop album I’ve ever owned. It is dance pop, right? Classifications get so iffy. These guys really know how to jam. Combine in your face dance beats with the sweet, sweet twang of a British voice, and you’ve got a match made in heaven. Was stoked to see their appearance in “Phonogram: The Singles Club #1”.
Track 10: I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You (The Twelves Remix) – Black Kids – Hell of a name. Black Kids know how to bring the thunda. While the original is “pretty” good, the remix really brings it. The twang of that funky guitar adds something to the song, and provides some much needed grooveability.
Track 11: Cutdown – Matt & Kim – The completion of our Iheartcomix trifecta. Matt & Kim is a truly talented group that couldn’t be more deserving of one’s respect. While “Daylight” is an absolutely amazing song, “Cutdown” provides a little more substance in terms of the dance floor. Definitely an interesting track, which may not take the dance floor by storm, but will slowly creep into peoples hearts and soles. Get it? I made a funny.
Track 12: Kids – MGMT – My new summer jam. After a 6-hour stint at the Isotope Comic Book Lounge, my friend Storm played this song around 4 times. From then on, it was stuck in my head. And I’m all the better for it. If you don’t feel like you should dance to this song, you have no soul. Srsly. The only thing that could be better than dancing to this song, is dancing to this song while wearing roller-skates.
Track 13: Pull Shapes (RAC Remix) – The Pipettes – If you can’t acquire the remix, the original will suffice, but you’ll be missing out. The Pipettes deliver a syrupy sweet 60s British girl band vibe, one that translates nicely to the dance floor. The Remix gives it that extra hit of danceability, which makes it all the more amazing. Try both, see what works for you.
Track 14: Wallflowers – MC Frontalot – What can be better than a song about not dancing, or dancing badly, delivered by the godfather of Nerdcore hip-hop? Besides for a hot bowl of Udon noodles, I’d say close to nothing. MC Frontalot delivers is always awkward lyrics in his always robotic tone yet again, but this time does it...groovy. If you listen to the lyrics you could really piece together this songs unique dance, but at risk of looking like an idiot. But once hearing this track, you’ll be doing the Margaret Thatcher all night long.
Track 15:You'll Find A Way (Switch & Sinden Remix) – Santogold – Awww yeah. Who here can belly dance? It’s your turn to shine. A song which had an almost rockabilly feel has been given new life with this Mediterranean sounding remix. Talk about a hip mover. If all the girlies on the dance floor aren’t moving like the goddess Shakira by the end of this song, there’s something wrong. I suggest you run away. Run away quickly.
Track 16: Konichiwa Bitches – Robyn – A new track in my collection that’s slowly growing on me. Robyn delivers the sass and vocals that only a Swedish R&B singer could. There really isn’t much to say, just that you should go hear it for yourselves.
Track 17: She’s Got You High – Mumm-Ra – The one exception to the disclaimer. If possible, Mumm-Ra should be listened to last. The sweet, soothing melody brings you down from your dance induced high. No pun intended. HEYOH. But seriously, it’s a great song. A good way to round of a dancing session and easy to sway to.
You said he got his teeth fixed
I'm gonna break them
I've got a heart on fire
He said he's got his sights set
On getting to you
I've got a fist on fire
-Los Campesinos!
