Conquest

So we graduate today. Four years of utter awesome finally coming to an end. How does the T-Man feel about it? That’s a damn fine question.

The past four years have been an amazing experience. I was lucky enough to attend the best high school in the city. The offerings at Lowell have been much more than I could have asked for. It provided a space for me to grow and develop as a person. Without its very specific atmosphere, I can honestly say that I wouldn’t be the same person writing to you now. Not to get too cliché or anything, but it’s true. For those of you reading this that still have time to spend within the walls of Lowell, embrace it. Let it wash over you. Lowell is almost more of an experience than it is a school; something that prepares you for whatever it is that you will come to face in the future. Albeit, you may learn a lot academically, but I would argue it teaches you equally about what it is to be human.

I think that could be said for most high schools. You’re what, fourteen when you enter high school? Nature’s kicked in and you’re starting to get hair in places that you don’t wanna show your mom. Some of us more than others. You’re fresh outta middle school with a devil may care attitude. It’s only been a year or two since you started taking an interest in the opposite sex. Or maybe an extreme interest in the same sex. High school is place for you to figure those kinds of things out. It’s a period of growth, regardless of where you go. You figure out what you’re interested in, who exactly you want to spend your time with and start trying new things. You get involved, or maybe you don’t. You start to build up some semblance of who you plan to be. Of course you can always remake yourself, but high school gives you a spring board to propel yourself to that goal.

Then, there are the people. Any school is defined by those who inhabit its walls as much as it is by its academics or sports. Lowell is no exception. For the most part, my fellow Lowellites are some of the coolest, most awesome people that I have ever met. Let’s not fool ourselves though, we have our fair share of assholes, but they are vastly overshadowed by all of the cool kids. And it is them who I miss the most. Not the structured environment of high school, not the safety of being in a place where I am totally comfortable, but all of those friendly, familiar faces that make this place “home.”

If you’ve put up with my bullshit, I thank you. If you’ve laughed at my jokes, I thank you. If you’ve been there when I needed to talk, I thank you. If you’ve given me the time of day, I thank. If you’ve been my friend, I thank you.

It’s the absence of all of those people, which will truly make graduating hard.

For those of you who read this, I thank you.
